CROWN POINT | A hotel and billboard magnate has again made a list of the world's wealthiest individuals.
Forbes Magazine estimates Crown Point resident Dean White, 90, has amassed a fortune of $2 billion from building hotels and selling billboard ads. The national magazine pegs White as the 869th wealthiest billionaire in the world and 301st richest individual in the United States.
He sold his billboard company Whiteco Outdoor Advertising for about $960 million in 1998, and 100 hotels for $1.7 billion in 2006.
Last year, White's personal net worth had been estimated at $1.8 billion.
Though Forbes says White grew richer over the past year, his rank among the world's billionaires fell to 869, as compared to 831 last year.
White was the third richest person in Indiana, trailing behind Gayle Cook and Herb Simon. Cook, who co-founded Bloomington-based medical device manufacturer Cook Medical Group, is worth an estimated $5.8 billion, making her the 240th wealthiest person in the world. Simon, a co-founder of Indianapolis-based shopping mall management company Simon Property Group, has $2.2 billion.
The only other Indiana resident to make the Forbes list is Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay, who has earned an estimated $1.6 billion.
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates topped the 28th annual list with an estimated worth of $76 billion.
