GARY | The city is offering the first of two free tax preparation sessions for city residents from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Genesis Convention Center at 5th Avenue and Broadway in downtown Gary.
“This is an opportunity for Gary residents who work during the week to make an appointment and come have their taxes prepared on a Saturday,” Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson said.
The event, presented by the Urban League of NWI, allows for residents who earned $51,000 or less to have taxes prepared at no cost by skilled tax professionals. University of Chicago students will be on hand to help greet residents and screen documentation.
Several vendors also will be on-site to provide information about checking and savings accounts, energy assistance and literacy programs.
The next session is set from 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 16. Residents must make an appointment at (219) 980-2093 to participate.
