If any one establishment in Munster captures the spirit of the Beach Boys "Endless Summer," it’s Frozen Yogurt Express.
The venerable yogurt emporium, known for bargain cone specials, is about to relocate and supersize.
Frozen Yogurt Express, commonly known as Froyo, is moving from the 200-square-foot brick outpost at 8313 Calumet, where it has been located since 1996, to a spiffy new 1,800-square-foot space in the Munster Shops mall at 8207 Calumet.
Frozen Yogurt Express' new neighbors include the popular Five Guys hamburger joint and Chipotle. Opening day is planned for early October.
“We’re adding cakes and a hot new tangy yogurt from California; we’ll be bigger and badder, but will retain the original flavors that has made Froyo so popular in Munster,” said owner Bob Schwebke. Frozen Yogurt Express also has a location in Highland.
Schwebke’s wife, Linda, will be in charge of designing and producing custom-made ice cream and yogurt cakes, from 8-inch to sheet sized, that will populate the massive walk in freezers being installed in the store. Look for expanded ice cream and yogurt offerings to include new concoctions like red velvet cake and sea salt caramel pretzel.
According to Schwebke, the big draw will be the walk up window, emulating and amplifying the friendly ambiance of the old location with new engineering. A large, movable glass facade fronts the mall location, allowing for a completely air conditioned and heated zone that can be converted to an outdoor space at the push of a button.
“You’ll have sun, AC and frozen treats at a walk up window; we’re offering the best of an indoor restaurant outdoors,” he said.
The new Frozen Yogurt Express will be open all year round.
