An upcoming fundraiser will aim to keep Hammond's historic Kennedy Theatre open.

The benefit will take place between 3 and 11 p.m. Saturday at the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge at 7527 Kennedy Ave., just north of Interstate 80/94.

Bands, including Gerhart and Chasing Skylines, will perform. The movie theater will auction off a large number of items, including a Walter Payton jersey, a Jak's Warehouse gift card, and a Plaza Lanes bowling party package.

The movie theater needs to raise enough money to purchase two digital projectors by the end of the year, when movie studios will stop distributing 35 mm films.

The Kennedy Theater, which has been a staple of Hammond's Hessville neighborhood for more than 50 years, must raise around $140,000 or be forced to close.
