Gary/Chicago International Airport has apparently decided to appeal the Federal Aviation Administration's decision to close the airport's control tower April 7 due to federal sequester budget cuts.
Gary Airport Authority board secretary Ross Amundson said airport management had reconsidered its decision not to appeal the tower closing as he was interviewed on The Lakeshore 89.1 FM Wednesday morning.
Amundson spoke on the matter one day after the Gary Jet Center, an aircraft refueling and maintenance business at the airport, said it would step in and appeal the tower closure since the airport was not.
On Monday, Airport Project Manager Bob Gyurko said the airport had made the decision not to appeal the FAA's decision because only appeals based on "national security" would be considered.
Amundson attributed the airport's initial decision not to appeal to confusion in the absence of Airport Interim Director Steve Landry at Monday's airport authority meeting.
