Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson and Gary airport officials will be hopping a regularly scheduled Allegiant airline flight to Sanford, Fla., on Thursday to meet with Sanford officials about promoting trips between their two cities.
The trip to Florida has been discussed for a couple of months at meetings of the Gary/Chicago International Airport Authority and was initiated by Gary officials. Allegiant started flying between Gary/Chicago International Airport and Orlando Sanford International Airport in February.
“Meeting our Orlando counterparts is a great conversation that could turn into something much bigger for both airports,” said Freeman-Wilson. “Orlando is certainly a destination, and we want to share with them how our proximity to Chicago makes Gary a viable destination as well."
Also going on the trip are Gary/Chicago International Airport Authority Vice President Rev. Marion Johnson, airport Interim Director Steve Landry, marketing officials and others.
While in Sanford, the Gary contingent will meet with Sanford Mayor Jeff Triplet, Sanford Airport Authority President Larry Dale and others.
