VALPARAISO | Fagen Pharmacy this week will host a diabetes education class called Carbohydrate Counting: Your Daily Drills.

The presentation will last from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at the pharmacy, 1001 N. Sturdy Road.

Learn how to be a baby sitter

MICHIGAN CITY | Franciscan St. Anthony Health hospital in Michigan City will offer its next Safe Sitter baby-sitting course from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 10.

Participants ages 11 through 14 will learn safe child care skills, basic first aid and child nurturing techniques.

Students should meet in the hospital lobby and will be escorted to the classroom in St. Francis Hal on the lower level of the hospital, 301 W. Homer St.

The fee is $35, and registration is required by calling (800) 931-3322. 

Get child vision screenings

MERRILLVILLE | Catholic Charities, Diocese of Gary, will host free vision screenings this week for children 3 to 6 years old.

The program is designed to detect lazy eye and related vision problems. Volunteers trained by Saving Sight Indiana will perform the screenings.

Screenings will be at 8:30 a.m. Friday at a health fair at Happy Days Preschool, 6111 Harrison St.

Catholic Charities is a not-for-profit social services agency that assists Lake, Porter, LaPorte and Starke counties. Services include counseling, emergency services, wheelchair ramp construction and adoption.

Obamacare session April 14

CROWN POINT | The University of Saint Francis Crown Point will continue its free lecture series with a presentation about the Affordable Care Act.

The Future of Healthcare: ACA Provisions and Terminology will last from 3:30-5:30 p.m. April 14 at Crown Point High School, 1500 S. Main St.

Blayne Miley, an attorney and Indiana State Nursing Association director of policy and advocacy, will lead professionals and practitioners to a deeper understanding of the act and its impact on services and client care.

His presentation will focus on Indiana’s approach to Medicaid expansion, insurance marketplaces and the terminology created as a result of the act. A question and answer session will follow.

Registration will be accepted online until April 13 at futureofhealthcare2014cp.eventbrite.com.

Nurses will earn 1.5 credit hours of continuing education through the event.

Osteoporosis talk set April 15

CALUMET CITY | The public is invited to join the Ingalls Center Steppers Mall Walkers Club at 9 a.m. April 15 at River Oaks Mall for a free discussion about osteoporosis.

Free blood pressure screenings will be offered between 8 and 10 a.m. as well. The group meets near the food court at the mall, 96 River Oaks Center Drive.
