HEBRON | Each Thursday through May 29, Dr. Alex Alvarez, a family medicine physician, will deliver a brief presentation about a current health topic and then lead participants on a health walk.

Walks will begin at 8 a.m. The length of the walk will vary from 1/4 mile to 2 miles. Presentations will be at the Hebron Community Center, 611 N. Main St.

Cancer screenings at hospital

VALPARAISO | Porter Regional Hospital will present Cancer Awareness and Prevention Day from 7 a.m. to noon May 3 at Valparaiso Medical Center, 1900 Roosevelt Road.

The event will feature screenings, a warm brunch and spa services by Serenity Salon & Spa. The goal is to increase awareness and educate the community that when it comes to cancer, early detection is key.

According to the American Cancer Society, screening increases the chances of detecting certain cancers early, when they are most likely to be curable.

There will be mammograms and CT lung cancer screenings at the event. Insurance will be billed for mammograms, and the lung cancer screenings are available to those who are eligible at a cost of $75.

Seniors advised on medication

HAMMOND | The public is invited to the May 8 meeting of the Franciscan Senior Promise group. The topic will be medication safety-drug interactions and will be presented by registered pharmacists from Franciscan St. Margaret Health hospital in Hammond. 

The meeting will be at 10 a.m. at the hospital, 5454 Hohman Ave. Attendees should check with the information desk in the front lobby to learn the meeting room location. 

Franciscan Senior Promise, a program of Franciscan St. Margaret Health hospital, is a club that offers people 55 and older information on health issues and advice on lifestyles choices, along with the opportunity to socialize and make new acquaintances. 

Meetings take place monthly, with game days, movie and popcorn days, defensive driving courses, a yearly flu shot clinic and daytime and overnight trips among scheduled activities.

Diabetes class held May 6, 13

VALPARAISO | Porter Regional Hospital’s Diabetes Education Department has developed a new class for diabetes patients, called Insulin Use and Diabetes Self Management.

The two-session class will help prepare patients to safely take insulin and work with their physician to individualize their care. Both sessions will be at Porter’s Education & Rehabilitation Center, 1401 Calumet Ave.

The first session is at 1:30 p.m. May 6; and the second session, a continuation of the first, will be at 1:30 p.m. May 13. 

A physician order is required. The charge is $108 and insurances and Medicare may cover it.
