MUNSTER | A central Indiana-based hospital has bought the Munster Med-Inn, a 225-bed skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility.

Major Hospital made the acquisition on Jan. 1, said Ryan Claxton, vice president of business development and strategy for Major Health Partners.

Riverview Hospital previously held the license, he said. The amount of the deal was not disclosed.

Munster Med-Inn is located at 7935 Calumet Ave.

Claxton said there will be a "quality-focused and mutually beneficial relationship" with the management company operating Munster Med-Inn. Staff will not be affected.

"Munster Med-Inn maintains day-to-day operations of the facility," Claxton said. "This relationship will provide both strategic and quality of care benefits for Major, Munster Med-Inn and these residents," he said.

Major has been working with several nursing homes to improve the discharge process, reduce re-admissions, deter potentially avoidable admissions, better coordinate care and positively impact the care continuum between nursing homes and hospitals, Claxton said.

Major hosts meetings with its nursing home partners to discuss best practices and quality metrics, he said.

"Major is unique to many hospitals in that it employs a department of individuals whose primary focus is devoted to our nursing home relationships," Claxton said. "We have hired a licensed administrator who has extensive experience in both a large nursing home chain as well as a smaller, single home owner."

The administrator makes regular visits to the nursing homes and assists in multiple ways, including staff training, financial guidance and quality and patient safety oversight, Claxton said.
