General Motors Corp. will upgrade its Bedford Foundry and will retain jobs. GM says it will invest $44 million in plant upgrades to produce transmission cases and converter housings for its 6-speed transmissions. The project will help retain about 100 production jobs.
Indiana joins settlement with ChoicePoint
Indiana has joined 43 other states in a settlement with ChoicePoint to resolve allegations the company failed to adequately protect customer information. The company provides identification and credential verification services to businesses, government and nonprofit organizations. In 2005, ChoicePoint announced criminals posing as legitimate businesses gained access to consumer information. Indiana Attorney General Steve Carter's office says 2,300 Indiana residents were affected.
Meeting set for Spencer ethanol plant
A meeting is scheduled June 10 in Spencer County to allow residents to learn about a 100-million-gallon ethanol plant being proposed by Biofuels International. The Evansville Courier & Press reports that officials from the county and the company will be in attendance to discuss the project and answer questions.
Goshen launches downtown program
In an effort to revitalize the downtown district, Downtown Goshen Inc. is starting a First Friday program today. It will run on the first Friday of every month throughout the year. They are designed to be a downtown block party, with participating businesses and arts and entertainment venues offering special events and promotions. Special events include gallery openings, food and wine tasting, concerts and dancing lessons. The initial First Friday will run from 5 to 9 p.m.
IRS warns of new e-mail scam
The Internal Revenue Service says a new e-mail scam that is circulating is intended to fool people into believing that they are being investigated by the agency. The IRS says the scam falsely states that a person is under investigation for submitting a false tax return in California. The IRS is urging people not to click the link in the e-mail or open the attachment.
Survey: Leaders should have integrity
A survey by Robert Half Management Resources shows that the mark of a good leader is the ability to be honest and upstanding. Thirty-one percent of chief financial officers polled said a business leader should possess integrity, followed by 27 percent who think experience is important.
Movie car to be offered at Kruse
Kruse International will auction the car used in the movie "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" during its Spring MotorFair Saturday. The vehicle being sold was used for stage close-ups and transformation scenes. It had been on display at a restaurant attraction. The Spring MotorFair begins at 10 a.m. EDT.
