Supermarket operator Jewel-Osco plans to close its Michigan city store in early October and shed 121 workers, according to a notice filed with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

Jewel said its sole LaPorte County store at 3535 S. Franklin St. would close permanently Oct. 8. The company sent the notice pursuant to the Worker Adjustment Retraining and Notification Act, also known as a WARN Act.

Clerks at the store are represented by the Rosemont, Ill.-based United Food and Commercial Workers Local 881 and meatcutters are represented by the Indianapolis-based United Food and Commercial Workers Local 700.

The closure leaves stores in Chesterton, Crown Point, Dyer and Munster as the remaining Jewel stores in Indiana.

Jewel-Osco parent Eden Prairie, Minn.-based SuperValu Inc. is one of the nation's largest U.S. grocery store companies with annual sales of about $35 billion and about 4,400 stores under monikers including Jewel, Albertson's, Cub Foods, County Market and Save-A-Lot.

SuperValu Board Chairman Wayne Sales replaced Craig Heckert as president and CEO on July 30. In SuperValu's first quarter ended June 16, the company had net income $41 million, down 43 percent from the comparable period a year ago. Total sales were down 4.7 percent to $10.6 billion.
