GARY │ Nearly 50 employers were offering full-time, part-time and internship opportunities Friday at the 12th annual Indiana University Northwest job fair.

Sharese Dudley-Mora, director of career services at IUN, said a steady stream of students, alumni and community members interested in “excellent employment opportunities" visited the campus for the fair.

“All of the employers are hiring,” she said. “I think this is a good sign the job market is picking up.”

Aldi District Manager Nicole Smith said her company is hiring for nearly all of its stores in Northwest Indiana. Job seekers were stopping by to drop off resumes and inquire about the part-time and full-time cashier positions available and an opening for a district manager position.

“It’s a phenomenal company,” Smith said. “There’s a lot of growth, it’s stable and pays well.”

Companies looking for new employees or interns at the job fair included ArcelorMittal, Calumet Breweries, Campagna Academy, Franciscan Alliance, Horseshoe Casino, Panda Express, Peoples Bank, Radio One Communications, Sears and Strack & Van Til.

Connie Chapman, a Sears human resource representative, said the retailer is looking to fill sales associate jobs in Merrillville.

“There have been quite a few people here, and I’m hopeful to get people hired all over the store,” she said.

IUN student Collin Hadley was at the fair looking for employment. Hadley called it “a great opportunity to come here and get yourself out there.”

“They seem like they’re looking for people and it looks like there’s opportunities out there, but it’s a competitive market,” he said.

Jonathan Buckner, of Crown Point, was attending his first job fair in 11 years because he’s trying to get a new start in employment.

“I was very hopeful coming here trying to get some networking in and to get a foot in the door somewhere,” he said. “I got a few prospects for interviews next week.”
