MERRILLVILLE | James Muhammad, a Peabody Award-winning director of radio services for West Virginia Public Broadcasting, is the new president and CEO of Lakeshore Public Media.

Lakeshore, Board of Directors Chairwoman Dr. Bonita Neff announced his appointment Thursday.

“James is a well-rounded leader with experience in public media, programming and community outreach,” Neff said. “For more than a decade, he built a team that worked collaboratively on radio and television projects, and engaged the community and its leaders. That’s why our board unanimously chose him.”

Muhammad, 42, said he is excited to work with Lakeshore’s staff and committed community partners.

“A lot of great things are happening currently in Lakeshore Public Media,” Muhammad said. “I really see a bright future ahead for us.”

Muhammad praised the news operation and youth quiz program as excellent.

Muhammad’s first plan of action is meeting Lakeshore’s staff and introducing himself to members of the community.

“The most important part of the job is service work and being connected to the community and being connected to the core values of public broadcasting,” Muhammad said.

Muhammad, whose career in public broadcasting spans nearly two decades, will officially join Lakeshore on May 20.

Community members can meet Muhammad at the station’s 25th anniversary celebration May 16 at Merrillville’s Star Plaza Theatre. The anniversary celebration will highlight the station’s history and accomplishments and preview new initiatives which Muhammad will lead, Neff said.

Over the past 25 years, the station has progressed from a one-person show to a full-time newscast, 300 hours of locally produced programming, support from more than 7,000 members and a joint license with National Public Radio affiliate station 89.1 FM The Lakeshore.

Tickets cost $75. Contacting Brandi Anstine at (219) 756-5656, ext. 317.

Merrillville-based Lakeshore Public Media is operated by the nonprofit organization Northwest Indiana Public Broadcasting Inc., which operates WYIN-TV 56 and WLPR-FM 89.1.
