Leadership Northwest Indiana has launched the South Shore Leadership Youth for Community Engagement program.

In all, 42 youth in 9th through 11th grade will be selected for this program to develop leadership skills, foster a love and knowledge of Northwest Indiana and build connections with adult leaders and organizations in the Region. They will meet one full day a month from January to December excluding May and September.

The new program aims to prepare high achieving high school students to become future leaders who are committed, empowered and involved in their communities. The ideal participant is not necessarily someone who is currently in a high profile leadership role, but one who shows high potential to make a difference in the region.

This program was made possible through grants received from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, John W. Anderson Foundation and Crown Point Community Foundation. Portions of the tuition are covered by the participant, a participant sponsor organization and the nominating entity.

Applications for participation in the program are due Nov 15.

Ideal nominating organizations are those that work closely with youth on a regular basis and can readily identify those who meet the qualifications and would flourish in this unique and dynamic program.

Leadership Northwest Indiana, based in Valparaiso, is a nonprofit organization that offers a program of education, information and interaction to leaders from the business community, government, nonprofit organizations and social service agencies in Northwest Indiana's seven-county region.

The program is also seeking participant sponsor organizations. To make a nomination or become a participant sponsoring organization, call (219) 465-6818 or visit www.leadershipnwi.org .
