MERRILLVILLE | South Shore Clean Cities is among a consortium of alternative-fuel groups from Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin awarded a $764,266 grant aimed at overcoming barriers to expanding alt-fuel vehicles in the Great Lakes.
The grant from the U.S. Department of Energy will fund projects by Chicago Area Clean Cities, Wisconsin Clean Cities and South Shore Clean Cities. Carl and Lorrie Lisek, executive directors of South Shore Clean Cities in Merrillville, will direct the program's educational components.
"We will look to train and educate fuel retailers, first responders, vehicle mechanics, code officials, measurement agencies and fleet operators about alternative-fueled vehicles," Carl Lisek said in a statement issued Wednesday.
The City of Chicago's Department of Transportation, NIPSCO and Automotive Training Solutions will partner in the program.
"Our goals include changing or implementing ordinances, collaborating on alternative fuel station locations and opportunities, creating and adopting vehicle conversion inspection criteria and replicating successful incentive programs from the region," Lisek said.
