A few local law firms made U.S. News & World Report's list of the Best Law Firms of 2014.

Abrahamson Reed & Bilse in Hammond, Sach & Hess in St. John; Langer & Langer in Valparaiso; Smith & Debonis in Highland; and Newby Lewis, Kaminski & Jones LLP, in LaPorte all made the prestigious list of top legal practices. Eichhorn & Eichhorn LLP, in Hammond earned both national and municipal rankings.

The digital magazine, which is well-known for its national rankings of colleges, hospitals and consumer products, evaluated law firms across the country by weighing client feedback and peer regard. Clients and peers were asked to consider responsiveness, understanding of a business and its needs, cost-effectiveness, integrity, civility and whether they would refer a matter to the firm or consider it a worthy competitor. Law firms cannot pay to be ranked.

Newby, Lewis, Kaminski & Jones earned metropolitan Tier 1 rankings in the areas of commercial litigation, criminal defense, insurance law, litigation, labor and employment, medical malpractice law, and personal injury litigation. The full-service firm has been around for more than a century and is the largest in LaPorte County with 14 lawyers and more than 30 staff members.

U.S. News & World Report named Sach & Hess a metropolitan Tier 1 firm in the area of family law. The 43-year-old general practice law firm is based out of a St. John office near the intersection of U.S. 30 and Indianapolis Boulevard, and serves a wide area that includes Lake, Porter, LaPorte, Jasper and Newton counties.

Abrahamson Reed & Bilse earned a metropolitan Tier 1 ranking in personal injury litigation defense and a metropolitan Tier 3 ranking in appellate practice. The general practice firm is headquartered in downtown Hammond, and specializes in trials and appeals, labor and employment, corporate law and litigation, building, zoning and land use.

Smith & Debonis in Highland picked up a metropolitan Tier 2 ranking in personal injury litigation for plaintiffs, and downtown Valparaiso-based Langer & Langer made a metropolitan Tier 1 list in that category.

Downtown Hammond-based Eichhorn & Eichhorn earned a national Tier 3 ranking in commercial litigation, as well as rankings in municipal and commercial litigation in the metropolitan Chicago area. The 75-year-old firm is one of the largest in Northwest Indiana, and has represented a number of major businesses, including BP, NiSource, Luke Oil and Norfolk Southern.
