LOWELL | A manufacturer of window and door hardware, plans to lay off 66 employees starting Nov. 16 and close its operation March 31.
Ashland Hardware Systems, a subsidiary of Newell Rubbermaid Inc., sent a notice Friday to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development that it planned to shutter the manufacturing plant located at 790 W. Commercial Ave. The notice was sent pursuant to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act.
No union represents the affected employees and bumping rights are not applicable to the permanent plant closing.
After learning of the plant's closure, town leaders in August were working on possible annexation plans to expand the tax base.
The plant on Commercial Avenue churns out injection-molded plastic window parts for such well-known manufacturers as Andersen, Pella and Marvin.
