Family gatherings, shared meals, church services and a day off from work highlight many Christmas Day celebrations. But for many, it's simply another day on the job.

Portage 16 IMAX opens at 3 p.m. on Christmas, and manager Kevin Morgan said it is usually a busy time.

“There are always new titles that come out Christmas Day and people are itching to use the new gift cards they have,” Morgan said. “We are able to spend the morning with our families and then head into work as scheduled.

Portage 16 IMAX shift supervisor Juan Mendez is working on Christmas.

“I’m fine with working on the holiday because the theater is a weekend and holiday business,” Mendez said. “I know what the job entails. Holidays and weekends are when families can get together and go out to see a movie.”

Mendez said his family will most likely come in to see a movie he already has previewed.

Denny’s Restaurants are open 24 hours, including Christmas Day. Last year nationally, Denny’s served more than 1.5 million customers on Dec. 25, a corporate news release said.

“Some of our Christmas Day guests join us to continue the holiday merriment with friends and family without the stress and expense of cooking for themselves,” John Dillon, vice president of marketing and product development, said in the release. “Others are on their way to or from work. And there are millions of Americans who celebrate holidays other than Christmas this time of year.”

Gayle Solomon, a server at the Merrillville Denny’s, 720 E. 81st Ave., is scheduled to work Christmas Day. Solomon doesn’t mind working the holiday.

“Everybody is in a good mood,” Solomon, who is working 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., said. “It’s more family-oriented.”

Solomon’s daughter and son-in-law will be out of town.

“If I had family things going on it might be different,” Solomon said.

The Immediate Care Center: The Doctor Is In in Schererville will be open from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. Christmas Day.

Dr. Fausto Magno is scheduled to work this holiday.

“Everyone in our family is used to it,” Magno said. “My wife is a doctor. My oldest daughter is a doctor and another daughter is in medical school.”

Magno will cook for his family when they gather Christmas Eve and said the later opening will enable him to share breakfast with everyone before he leaves. After work, his family plans to see “Les Miserables” at a local theater.
