The media market in Northwest Indiana has proven resilient, with revenues generally up over 2012, according to Leigh Ellis, president of Radio One Communications.
When last year ended, revenues at Radio One Communications, which operates four stations in the region, were up 7 percent, Ellis said.
"Now I know that number sounds good, but that really only brings us back to where we left off in 2008, in gross dollars," Ellis said.
The year of 2008 was when the recession hit advertisers the hardest, as businesses retrenched on all kinds of spending in the face of the recession. Since then, the nimble and the persistent have managed to bounce back, while others have fallen by the wayside.
"With media, with the digital age, change can happen overnight," Ellis said.
Nationally, media revenues were only up 1 percent to 3 percent last year. The recent federal "fiscal cliff" fight flattened the outlook a bit more, as advertisers became more cautious with their dollars, Ellis said.
