MERRILLVILLE | A former welder's helper who overcame a near-fatal workplace accident and went onto to be a inspiration speaker will keynote a local safety conference.

Brad Livingston, who tours nationally for his talks on worksite safety, will headline the Beyond Safety & Reliability Conference and Expo in Merrillville. Livingston was seriously injured by two back-to-back explosions in 1991. Doctors gave him a 5 percent chance of survival, but he has since undergone skin grafts, amputations and several other procedures.

The BP Whiting Refinery is sponsoring his appearance at the fourth annual event, which gathers safety and human resources professionals from around the Midwest for seminars, trade show exhibits and networking. The conference is geared toward the industrial, construction management, occupational health, loss control and human resources industries.

At least 600 people are expected to attend this year's conference which takes place Tuesday and Wednesday at the Radisson Star Plaza in Merrillville.
