MICHIGAN CITY | NIPSCO and Michigan City are teaming up next week to host information sessions where people can learn about pre-apprentice programs for construction jobs as the utility ramps up work on its $250 million generating station upgrade.
Representatives from the Indiana Plan, a program that aims to boost minority representation in the building trades, will inform attendees about how to get into their "learn and earn" pre-apprentice programs.
The first information session will be 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, at City Hall, 100 E. Michigan Ave. The second session will be at the same location from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.
A similar program was launched between NIPSCO and the city of Gary last year, when the utility was installing environmental upgrades at the R.M. Schahfer Generating Station in Wheatfield.
“Civic-corporate partnerships such as this not only benefit the local economy, they help strengthen our community and workforce," said Michigan City Mayor Ron Meer.
NIPSCO already has started work on installing a pollution control system known as a "scrubber" at its Michigan City Generating Station. The project will take three years to complete.
“The upcoming construction project at the Michigan City Generating Station is not only a plus for the environment, it’s an investment in Northwest Indiana’s long-term economic success,” said Mike Hooper, NIPSCO vice president of major projects.
