The Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission has extended the time for taking public comment on big revisions to its 2007 Public Participation Plan. It also has scheduled four open meetings to take more comments.

The Public Participation Plan lays out the guidelines and policies that allow the public to share ideas and concerns in regional planning and decision-making done by NIRPC. The agency is responsible for developing and implementing plans for transportation, economic development and the environment.

NIRPC is a council of governments with representatives from each community in Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties. It is also a Metropolitan Planning Organization with federally mandated responsibilities for approving transportation projects.

NIRPC will continue to take comments on its Public Participation Plan through April 2, including at the following meetings:

March 25 Michigan City City Hall -- 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. meet and ask questions of NIRPC staff; 5 p.m. 90-minute program on NIRPC's Public Participation Plan.

March 27 Valparaiso City Hall -- 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. meet and ask questions of NIRPC staff; 5 p.m. 90-minute program on NIRPC's Public Participation Plan.

April 2 Hammond Public Library -- 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. meet and ask questions of NIRPC staff; 1:30 p.m. 90-minute program on NIRPC's Public Participation Plan.

April 2nd Hammond Public Library -- 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. meet and ask questions of NIRPC staff; 5 p.m. 90-minute program on NIRPC's Public Participation Plan.
