Customers enrolled in NIPSCO's Extra Service Protection plans will be getting their appliance protection and other services from a new company.

NIPSCO parent Nisource Inc. announced Thursday it has sold its retail services business for $120 million to AGL Resources Inc., which now will manage and market utility-related home services to customers at NiSource subsidiaries.

NIPSCO's Extra Service Protection offers furnace, water heater and other repairs to customers for an extra charge on their monthly utility bill.

Robin Boren, president of AGL Resources Retail Services pledged a "seamless" transition for customers at NiSource utilities in five states.

“We are committed to providing a seamless transition for customers previously served by NiSource’s retail services business and look forward to continuing to offer these customers innovative and value-driven products,” Boren said.

NiSource CEO Robert Skaggs Jr. said the sale of the services will allow the utility holding company to better focus on its core regulated utility and pipeline businesses.

Those core businesses include NIPSCO's electric and natural gas businesses, which have 457,000 and 786,000 customers respectively in northern Indiana.
