Last quarter indications show improvement may be on the horizon in the nonprofit sector.

Market growth, an uptick in employment and housing gains signal good news, said Harry Vande Velde III, former president and CEO of Legacy Foundation.

Vande Velde now serves as president of Andrean High School.

Philanthropy tends to lag behind the commercial market but follows a similar path, Vande Velde said.

"We really kind of rely on being able to see how things are in the market – in employment, in forecasts in the region – and we'll catch up two quarters or three quarters later," he said.

All things that come to bear in the commercial market come to bear in the nonprofit sector, he said.

"Before all this craziness in Washington was going on, things seemed to be on the uptick in the region," he said.
