HAMMOND │ The North Township trustee's office hosted its seventh annual Community Career Fair on Friday.

About 25 employers and vendors were on hand, including ArcelorMittal, Luke Oil, Home Depot, Majestic Star Casino, Nurse Finders and Citizens Bank.

Cindy Rivera, North Township trustee employment and education coordinator, said Trustee Frank Mrvan came up with the idea to host the annual fair to give their clients job opportunities in addition to those not in the district.

“Most of our clients are unemployed,” Rivera said.

This year marked the first time the township hosted the fair at its Circle of Services building on 165th Street near Kennedy Avenue after buying it about a year ago.

Rivera said the building offers different services to clients, including financial counseling and money management.

At the career fair, Kelly Laffey, Luke Oil human resource manager, said the company was searching for sales associates and managers for its gas station/convenience stores. Laffey said the comany collected 15 resumes just over an hour into the fair. Qualified candidates for the sales associate positions start out at $9 an hour.

“We offer a tremendous amount of internal growth,” she said.

Keith Vitkovich, apprenticeship coordinator for Roofers and Waterproofers Local 26, was looking for apprenticeship candidates. He said applications have been down this year, but usually year-round there is a lot of interest.

“It’s a hard job but you have decent wages and good benefits,” he said.

Representing ArcelorMittal at the fair was Shaun Darling, who was letting attendees know about its Steelworker for the Future program in addition to the maintenance and utility positions the steel company had available.

Rodney Banks, of Hammond, said he came to the fair to see what’s going in the community and what employers were on hand.

“It’s a great atmosphere,” he said.
