A Kmart store in Portage was added to the list of Sears Holding Corp. stores that are slated to close.
The Portage location joins a St. John Kmart among the 100 to 120 Sears and Kmart stores the Hoffman Estates, Ill.-based retailer said it plans to close. About 80 locations have been announced as of Friday.
The St. John Kmart, 9550 Wicker Ave., and Portage Kmart, 6050 U.S. 6, are the only Northwest Indiana stores on the closure list so far.
A Kmart store in Indianapolis and a Sears store in Anderson also are closing, according to the most recent list the company released. Since the first quarter of 2010, nine stores under Sears Holdings in Illinois have been closed.
Closing dates for the Portage and St. John stores were not immediately available Friday.
Between 40 and 80 employees work at a typical store, and the company could not provide the total number of employees affected by the closings.
Sears Holding Corp. is the latest retailer to announce a major shuttering of stores.
Payless ShoeSource owner Collective Brands Inc. said in August it planned to shutter 400 "underperforming and low volume, non-strategic" Payless stores in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico and 75 StrideRite Children's locations over the next three years. Multiple Payless locations in Northwest Indiana are slated to close as a result of the company's decision.
