The Indiana Department of Environmental Management is hosting a public hearing Thursday on draft permits for BP Products North America Inc.'s Whiting Refinery.
The hearing will begin at 5 p.m. at the Hammond Civic Center, 5825 S. Sohl Ave.
The hearing is related to IDEM's preliminary findings on a significant modification of the BP's operating permit issued Dec. 14, 2006.
The new permit would incorporate requirements of a consent decree filed in U.S. District Court in Hammond earlier this year that would resolve objections to the BP's Title V permit the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued to IDEM in 2009 and prior appeals of the company's construction and operating permits.
Residents can submit written comments and make formal statements on the draft permit for the proposed new equipment. The public comment period ends Monday.
Comments should be sent to Kristen Willoughby, IDEM Office of Air Quality, 100 N. Senate Ave., MC 61-53 IGCN 1003, Indianapolis, IN 46204-2251. Refer to permit number SSM 089-32033-00453 and SPM 089-31849-00453 in all correspondence.
