NIPSCO has teamed up with the American Lung Association and the state to offer rebates of up to $5,000 for people who change out or retrofit their older wood burning boilers, stoves and fireplaces with energy-efficient appliances.

Residents of Lake, Porter, LaPorte, Starke, Elkhart, St. Joseph and Allen counties are eligible for the rebates, according to NIPSCO.

Two types of rebate vouchers are available. General residential vouchers provide up to $5,000 depending on the kind of energy-efficient heater or appliance installed. Those are administered by the American Lung Association.

A second type of voucher, with qualification based on income, can provide credits of up to $4,000 towards a new heating appliance. That program is administered by the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority.

Households with incomes up to 150 percent of federal poverty standards are eligible. Also eligible are those who receive any type  of public assistance or have already qualified for income-qualified energy programs such as LIHEAP.

The rebate program is one of several environmental mitigation projects totaling $9.5 million that NIPSCO is undertaking under a settlement reached two years ago with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
