CHICAGO | Gov. Pat Quinn and community leaders gathered Monday in Chicago's Pullman neighborhood to reopen a reconstructed Woodlawn/Doty Avenue, which will lead to one of the South Side's first Walmart Supercenters and an adjacent retail center.
“Today is a great day for everyone who lives and works in Pullman Park,” Quinn said. “Infrastructure improvements like this support communities as they grow by putting people back to work and laying the foundation for economic development for years to come.”
The $4.6 million road reconstruction was funded with federal disaster money allotted to Illinois in the wake of Hurricane Ike in 2008. It included water main and sewer work along the roads between 103rd and 106th streets.
A tax increment financing district was previously created for the new Pullman Park development, where the Wal-Mart will be located.
The road reconstruction created 300 construction jobs, and officials estimate 400 additional construction jobs will be created during the building of the Pullman Park development. About 1,000 permanent retail jobs also are forecast for the development.
In addition to a Walmart to open soon at 720 E. 111th St., Ross Dress for Less and Planet Fitness have signed on as some of the Pullman Park development's first tenants. Other plans for the 180-acre site include affordable housing, parks and recreation space.
