VALPARAISO | Valparaiso University basketball fans likely will recognize his name.

As one of the all-time scoring leaders in the school’s basketball history, Dave Redmon is now looking to become a star in another arena – the business world.

Redmon recently became a dealer for Bath Planet, a Palatine-based bathroom remodeling company that is backed by BCI, a manufacturer of tub and shower-liner systems. Redmon works closely with his mother and brother to service Northwest Indiana, providing clients with bathroom solutions that meet their budgets.

“We are a dealer for the company, but more importantly, we are partners with them,” he said. “If we’re successful, then so are they and vice versa.”

Bath Planet specializes in installing bath and shower systems, but also offers bath remodels that allow older residents to regain their bathing independence through products such as walk-in tubs.

“I think the direction they are going in nationally really attracted us, and from the moment you meet them, you feel as though you’re a family with them,” Redmon said. “They really will do whatever is necessary to help you succeed.”

From the top down, the family feel at Bath Planet is important to Redmon, considering he relies on his own family for his success.

“I think that working with my mom and my brother has really benefited the business because we all have different skills, which makes it easier for us,” he said.

Working as a team is nothing new for Redmon, however.

As a player on Valparaiso University’s basketball team from 1991 to 1995 and then a professional player in Poland from 1995 to 1998, Redmon knows how team dynamics and hard work play important roles in a business’ success.

“Athletics was great for me,” he said. “It taught me a lot about life, work ethic, competitiveness and being a teammate. Most importantly, I received an education.”

He credits his coaches for instilling the values he now brings to his business.

“Skip Collins, Bob Punter and Homer Drew are three of the nicest people you will ever meet, but they definitely let you know early on that basketball is going to end someday and you have to be ready for the rest of your life,” he said. “Thankfully, I listened.”

Being confident in an uncertain economy can be challenging for any business owner, but Redmon says the economy hasn’t worked against his business as much as others. This reassured him he was making a sound choice when he had to make a financial commitment to become a Bath Planet dealer.

“The unfortunate reality right now is our economy is in trouble, and many folks aren’t selling their homes and moving,” he said. “Instead, they are remodeling the ones they’re in, so from that standpoint, home improvement is still a strong business to be in.”

Although he operates his Bath Planet dealer business out of a home office, he plans to visit the idea of opening a storefront within a year or two.
