Feeling stressed about feeding 20 close relatives today? If so, be thankful this Thanksgiving you are not in Strongbow Inn owners Russ and Nancy Adams’ shoes.
Between dine-in reservations and carryout orders, Strongbow plans to feed about 3,000 local residents. Russ Adams said that translates into 11,000 pounds of turkey, 140 gallons of gravy, 400 gallons of bread dressing, 20,000 Strongbow rolls, 1400 pounds of whipped potatoes and 750 pounds of cranberries.
The restaurant staff has cooked about 290 turkeys since Monday, Russ Adams said.
In addition, the Strongbow bakery will send out 5,000 pastries for the holiday and an enormous but uncounted number of pies, Russ Adams said.
Adams begins taking Thanksgiving reservations Aug. 1. Reservations are filled about two weeks prior to the holiday but some open as people call in to lower or increase the number of people in their parties.
Strongbow, 2405 E. U.S. 30 in Valparaiso, was founded in 1940 seating 28 customers. Now, 72 years later, up to 600 diners can be served at one time. Named the 2011 Restaurant of the Year by the Indiana Restaurant Association, Strongbow donates 10 percent of special items served on lunch and dinner menus to the Porter County Community Foundation, Russ Adams said.
Andorra Banquets, 1112 U.S. 41 in Schererville, is serving a Thanksgiving buffet including turkey, pot roast, chicken, ham, Italian sausage and pasta from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. As of Tuesday, there were still openings for the some seatings. An employee said the restaurant won’t know until Thanksgiving Day whether business is as strong as last year because many walk-ins are expected.
Eli’s Golden Apple, 101 E. 107th Ave., Crown Point, will be open from to 6 a.m. through 2 p.m. Thanksgiving Day serving a regular menu plus traditional holiday specials. Owner Ilija “Eli” Kajmakoski said he decided to close early this Thanksgiving to let his employees celebrate the holiday with their families.
Other restaurants open this Thanksgiving are: Cracker Barrel, 6200 Opportunity Lane, Hobart from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. serving their regular menu; TJ Maloney’s in the Radisson Hotel at Star Plaza, I-65 and U.S. Hwy 30, featuring a buffet from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the Patio, 7706 Broadway, Merrillville serving a Champagne buffet from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Round the Clock, 833 W. Lincoln Hwy., Schererville, and 9010 Indianapolis Blvd., Highland are open until 2 p.m.; and Denny’s, in Merrillville, Gary and Lake Station will be open 24 hours.
Crown Point’s White Hawk Country Club, 1001 White Hawk Dr., has a 2 p.m. seating for a Thanksgiving Buffet with carving stations. Reservations are required with room remaining as of Tuesday.
Merrillville’s Simon Sez, 2250 W. 81st Ave., famous for their hot dogs, is serving free turkey dinners from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., an annual tradition. Although the dinners are free, customers are encouraged but not required to bring in donations of children’s winter clothing.
