Reducing NWI's dependence on foreign oil

Logging the equivalent of 9,128,381 gallons of gas in annual petroleum savings plus 70,566 less tons of carbon dioxide greenhouse gas emissions, the US Department of Energy recognized South Shore Clean Cities for having the top overall improvement in petroleum savings in 2012.

Group to focus on Region health needs

A new committee forming under the One Region initiative wants to improve the health of Northwest Indiana. The health committee will convene for an organizational meeting May 8, with Patrick Bankston, associate dean and director of IU School of Medicine - Northwest and dean of the College of Health and Human Services, and state Rep. Charlie Brown, D-Gary, as co-chairs, said Dennis Rittenmeyer, executive director of One Region.

Society selects April Innovators of the Month

As part of its effort to highlight its 2012-13 class, the Society of Innovators of Northwest Indiana has selected Kassie Meeks and Kevin Kirkham as its March Innovators of the Month.

South Shore Clean Cities to promote clean diesel at event

South Shore Clean Cities Inc. and the Indiana Clean Diesel Coalition have created events in northern Indiana to promote the use of clean diesel. Private and public entities that operate diesel fleets and related equipment that serve public needs are invited to attend. Carl Lisek, South Shore Clean Cities executive director, said the most important aspect to clean diesel is reducing emissions from diesel engines.

Centier bank, headquartered in Merrillville, placed third in the Indiana Chamber of Commerce's 2013 Best Places to Work in Indiana list. Other companies on the list include Edward Jones, Horseshoe Casino, NIPSCO, Trilogy Health, People's Bank, Kried DeVault LLP and the Skillman Corp.
