Northwest Indiana Index grows for 10th straight month
The Northwest Indiana Index rose slightly from 135.7 to 136.4 in August, the 10th straight month it increased. The slow but consistent growth tracks the national economy, said Bala Arshanapalli, the chair of the business and economics department at Indiana University Northwest in Gary.

U.S. Steel to offer rare tours of the Midwest Plant in Portage
Steel industry professionals and steel customers from across the world will descend on Avalon Manor in Merrillville for the International Surface Inspection Summit, which will take place Oct. 22 and 23. U.S. Steel is sponsoring the summit and will open the Midwest Plant in Portage to behind-the-scenes tours on Oct. 21 and 24.

Hundreds of students Friday and members from the general public learned about the wide variety of products made in LaPorte County as well as the job opportunities that exist here. Made in LaPorte County at the Civic Auditorium on Friday was organized by the economic development corporations from Michigan City and LaPorte. One of the messages from company representatives was that education is the key to moving up the ladder, but a high school diploma or GED will still do for jobs on the production floor.
