HIGHLAND | The Town Council has granted a 10-year tax abatement to Strack & Van Til for a warehouse it is converting into a corporate headquarters.
The warehouse, 2244 45th St., will become headquarters for the entire grocery chain and offices in other locations will be closed.
This will bring in 115 employees from those other offices, along with 30 new employees, Redevelopment Director Cecile Petro said.
"They want to start as soon as possible," she said of the project.
The warehouse, which sits near Christenson Chevrolet, is about 75,000 square feet, said Keith Bruxvoort, vice president of finance for the company.
The back section will be used for storage and the front 22,000 square feet will be expanded to a 43,000-square-foot headquarters.
"It looks like a warehouse today," Bruxvoort said. "It won't look like the front of a warehouse when we're done."
The new building front will face 45th, he said, noting that it will be made of brick and also feature a section almost entirely made of windows.
The project is expected to cost $3.5 million with a post-completion value of $6.2 million, board members said. The new employees will add about $2.5 million to the payroll.
Bruxvoort said the company hopes to begin the renovation around the middle of May and open in four months.
