EAST CHICAGO | Teamsters are expected to continue a third day of striking today against a trucking contractor after negotiators failed to reach an agreement Tuesday.

Members of Teamsters Local 142 picketed PTO, a company that hires truckers for Burnham Trucking. Burnham hauls steel out of ArcelorMittal.

The Teamsters are demanding better payment, better health benefits and company contributions toward their retirement, said Portage resident Mark Bogart, a company driver and a member of Teamsters Local 142 in Gary.

"We're not asking for the sun and moon out of these people," Bogart said. "We're asking to be treated fairly."

Mediation last week between the company and the union did not resolve the issues, and union members voted to strike Saturday.

Drivers picketed along a gravel area outside and across the street from 4000 Cline Ave. in East Chicago. The strike affects 47 drivers who work for PTO.

Larry Regan, vice president of Local 142, said negotiations are scheduled in the next week.

"Steel haul is a hard job," he said. "You're out in the elements, and it's dangerous. These guys are saying, 'We want a fair shake.' They're looking for some sort of job security and guarantees."

Neither PTO Services nor Burnham Trucking officials would comment Tuesday.
