Physical appearance is an emotional issue, and, as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. While facial aging is an inevitable process that affects all of us, there’s an ever-increasing focus on youthful appearance today – starting with an array of services and products that target the specific signs of aging people struggle with in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s and so on.
Perhaps that’s why you’ll find more and more people from all walks of life considering what was once an exclusive indulgence of the rich and famous.
Even through the worst economic recession this country has seen since the great depression, the number of cosmetic surgery and enhancement procedures continues to rise, with facial aesthetic treatments among the most popular cosmetic procedures around the world.
Statistics reported by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) earlier this year indicate another 5% increase in total cosmetic procedures year-over-year, with cosmetic surgical procedures including nose reshaping, eyelid surgery and facelift reaching nearly 1.6 million in 2011, up 2% from last year while cosmetic minimally invasive procedures such as Botox injections, soft tissue fillers and chemical peels grew to 12.2 million last year, up 6% from 2010.
Given the growing number of cosmetic surgery and enhancement patients, more and more doctors are offering a variety of procedures.
Along with the growth in cosmetic procedures, the ASPS numbers also demonstrate how recent techniques and technologies allow for more subtle, natural change and offer some of the most desirable results sought by patients today. As a result, both males and females – from business and community leaders to teachers, nurses, office workers and homemakers – are part of the growing enhancement trend.
Clearly, this trend is indicative of “self-improvement” of a different kind. According to local otolaryngology and facial plastic surgeon Dr. Bethany Cataldi, the impact of cosmetic surgery and cosmetic enhancements on a patient is great.
“Overall it helps improve one’s self-confidence, one’s self esteem, and gives one a better quality of life,” she explained.
Dr. Cataldi is specially trained in otolaryngology, which is the oldest medical specialty in the US and requires up to 15 years of college and post-graduate training. Otolaryngology specifically focuses on the structures of the neck and face, including disorders of the ears, nose and throat (ENT). In addition, Dr. Cataldi completed additional surgical training with a special emphasis on cosmetic and facial plastic surgery exclusively for the facial structures and neck anatomy – a level of specialized training few otolaryngologists undertake.
Consequently, as one of northwest Indiana’s most accomplished ear, nose, and throat surgeons, Dr. Cataldi brings a vast amount of expertise in facial plastic surgery and cosmetic enhancement procedures to her patients.
Fulfilling a lifelong passion for providing medical care along with many years of extensive otolaryngology and facial plastic surgery training, Dr. Cataldi established Munster’s Center for Otolaryngology & Facial Plastic Surgery in 2006. One of the very few female facial plastic surgeons in our region, she immediately made an impact on patient results with her unique “one to one” approach to care and singular dedication to the issues of beauty and facial aesthetics.
Recently, a common concern among prospective candidates for facial plastic surgery is the desire for any procedure that is performed be one that enhances their natural appearance rather than one that appears synthetic or “overdone.” In this age of reality television, there are candidates for facial plastic surgery who simply do not want to look overly enhanced.
“My ultimate goal in treating a patient is for a result that looks as natural as possible,” Dr. Cataldi explained. “Many of my patients are referred from other satisfied patients, and I try to put all of them at ease. An ideal candidate for cosmetic procedures is a patient who is realistic about what aesthetic improvements we can achieve. We’re on a journey together, and I want them to be happy at the end of it.”
For example, Dr. Cataldi’s years of experience include natural-looking mini face-lifts, full face-lifts and neck-lifts that go far in tightening the musculature of the face and neck, while blepharoplasty tightens the upper or lower eyelid skin, rhinoplasty reshapes the nose and otoplasty changes the appearance of the external ears. She also skillfully performs skin cancer and skin lesion surgery.
To reduce the visible effects of aging, Dr. Cataldi routinely performs non-invasive cosmetic enhancement procedures such as the applications of chemical peels, as well as Restylane®, Juvederm™ and Botox® in an office setting.
“When discussing any mini face-lift or wrinkle reduction procedures, rather than speaking broadly to large groups of potential candidates in a seminar setting, I prefer to direct my attention to and evaluate what each individual needs in a private and open dialogue to address each patient’s specific and unique concerns,” Dr. Cataldi explained. “My experience has shown that an honest ‘one-to-one’ approach with patients is best when it comes to cosmetic procedures, and it is clearly evident in the results.”
Evaluating each patient’s own expectations is something Dr. Cataldi takes very seriously.
While it may take time for a prospective patient to commit to such a potentially life-changing procedure, Dr. Cataldi finds the results are well worth the extra effort because they change the way her patients feel about themselves.
“It’s my privilege to be able to help patients achieve their aesthetic goals,” she said. “I always look at the process as a journey that a patient and I will take together, so we need to be on the same page as far as what is achievable and what is not through the services I can provide them. With this in mind, I feel that I can achieve wonderful results that can enhance a patient’s self-confidence beyond just their appearance. If in any way such enhancements help the wonderful people of our region, it’s really a joy to be able to do so.”
