The closing of of six local U.S. Cellular Corp. retail stores will affect about 50 workers.

Chicago-based U.S. Cellulary said it plans to close nearly a dozen Indiana outlets and let go more than 50 employees statewide.

The Northwest Indiana stores closing include the location at Westfield Southlake mall in Hobart, 5246 S. Franklin St. in Michigan City, 6215 U.S. 6 in Portage and 1500 Indianapolis Blvd. in Schererville. In all, 21 workers will be affected in those locations

The company also will close nearly 70 locations in Illinois, including its Lansing store at 16925 S. Torrence Ave. and the Homewood store at 17741 Halsted St. Those store closings will affect 29 workers.

In a notice to the state received last month, the company says the moves could be complete by mid-May as a result of the sale of its Chicago, Indiana and four other Midwest markets to Sprint Nextel for $480 million.
