United Auto Workers Local 551 invites community members to come learn about the union at an upcoming educational event.

The union's education committee wants the public and new members who are working at Ford's Chicago Assembly Plant to attend its first extravaganza, which will take place between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Saturday. The event will be held at the James Hamby Union Hall at 13550 S. Torrence Ave. in Chicago's Hegewisch community.

Attendees can enjoy games and food and get information from a number of groups, including the American Diabetes Association, United Way, Girl Scouts, Lupus Foundation of America, Visible Music College, American Cancer Society, Department of Veterans Affairs, Costco and L.A. Fitness.

President Carlo Bishop said the union wanted to have an open house because it has so many new members who have recently started working at the Ford plant and because Local 551 wants to be more involved in the community. Neighborhood residents and union members can learn more about the union, he said.
