VALPARAISO | Leadership Northwest Indiana Inc. has announced its transition to the South Shore Leadership Center Inc.
The Leadership Northwest Indiana Program, known as LNI, will remain intact as the signature program of the center. The current LNI class of about 50 participants began Sept. 12 and run through June.
The South Shore Leadership Center also houses the South Shore Leadership Youth for Community Engagement Program, which launched in January with a class of nearly 50 students from 23 regional high schools.
South Shore Leadership Center President and CEO Keith Kirkpatrick said the first class has exceeded expectations in terms of the impact it’s having on the students.
“Through our youth program we would be feeding our adult program down the road but more importantly we would be establishing a foundation for young leaders to say ‘wow, this is how you plug into your community,’” he said. “I think what is so important about our programs is we are about community leadership. People need to be leaders in their businesses; they need to be leaders in their organizations. But we’re talking about how people really are leaders in their communities at large and particularly in the region as a whole.”
The center will soon celebrate the graduation of its 1,000 person through LNI.
Kirkpatrick said the program allows participants to affect significant change by building a powerful network of people who are connected and know how to work together for a common good.
“And now we’re bringing young people into equation,” he said.
The center also plans to kick off a new adult program in the next year that will feature “more of a case study method,” Kirkpatrick said.
Kirkpatrick said the evolution into the SSLC is something leadership centers in major metropolitan areas began doing in the last several years as a way to move past just being an educational program into a set of programs that are about social change, structural change and improvement to the community.
“Leadership centers really drive an agenda for their region,” he said.
The transition also includes a complete new logo family featuring all programs and projects of the SSLC. A new interactive website has been launched at www.southshorelc.org.
