U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky, D-Merrillville, will tell the Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce about the benefits of expanding the South Shore commuter railroad to Dyer at its noon luncheon March 19 at Ameristar Casino, in East Chicago.

The Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority recently pledged to commit $8 million annually to the expansion for the life of the project and local communities are also taking a close look at lending their support.

It is forecast 5,600 riders per day would board on the eight-mile segment from Dyer to Hammond for the commute to Chicago. That would result in  $147 million per year in wages earned in Chicago being brought back to Northwest Indiana.

The noon luncheon will be preceded by a half hour of networking. For reservations, call the Lakeshore Chamber office at (219) 931-1000.
