HAMMOND | Job seekers were lined up outside the doors of Staff Source on Monday in hopes of being hired as a general laborer for Contract Services Group, a supplier to the automotive industry.

The staffing and recruitment firm held an open house in search of people to work temporary assembly-line positions in all shifts with pay ranging from $8.15 to $8.85 an hour. Some positions could last one or two days, others for several weeks, said Erin Trzcinski, director of strategic development for Business Solutions Group, which works with Staff Source.

“We need people immediately,” she said.

Monday’s process for applicants included a one-on-one interview and orientation. Free training also was offered. If hired, applicants would be working at CSG’s warehouse, located on site, or at Lear Corp. in Hammond or at a warehouse in Munster.

“Some people will say they’ll take anything because it’s a foot in the door,” Trzcinski said.

Kimberly Carter, of Whiting, was in line hoping her forklift experience would help her land a job. She wasn’t excited about any jobs paying about $8 an hour, however, especially with gas prices as high as they are.

“How can you survive on $8 an hour?” Even $10 an hour and you’re struggling,” she said.

At the CSG warehouse in Hammond employees build chairs for Ford automobiles as well as do sequencing for trim work. Magika Perez, warehouse quality analyst, said the temporary jobs offered on Monday could lead to bigger positions and better opportunities.

“You gain a lot of knowledge,” she said.
