Rex Richards said the economy "seems to be pretty good" in Porter County and other parts of Northwest Indiana, but there is a lot of concern in the business community about the nation's policy agenda after the election of the president and members of Congress.
He said businesses' top concerns are figuring out what their costs are going to be not only in 2013, but in the years following. He said those concerns range from the cost of health care to figuring out how the federal government is going to handle spending reductions and the budget deficit.
"I believe if companies feel like they're doing well, (but) people don't want to take on new employees when there's uncertainty," Richards said.
The reason Richards said he believes Porter County has fared so well is because the steel mills in the region haven't had the depth of layoffs they've experienced in past recessions and there's a healthy economic climate as a result of having one of highest per capita income among Indiana counties.
