Through the first three quarters of the year, Gene Diamond said inpatient volumes at hospitals are up and outpatient volumes are significantly higher compared to a year ago.
Diamond said there are signs the economy is improving, although the number of indigent patients the Franciscan Alliance serves is increasing and the state has been slow in paying funds to support the cost of care of these patients, many of whom are uninsured.
The Franciscan Alliance also continues to shift attention toward the outpatient side of the business. Earlier this month, the health care system completed an acquisition of Medical Specialists, which had 12 locations in Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties.
After the system was selected in December as a pilot participant in a program to improve care for Medicare beneficiaries, it is partnering with American Health Network in a larger Accountable Care Organization to enhance care for Medicare patients.
