The nonprofit community is a significant part of the economic engine in Northwest Indiana, Harry Vande Velde III said.
“We are a player at the table,” he said. “The not-for-profit community is a significant catalyst and driver in Northwest Indiana.”
The sector is employing more people, and the wages are nearing those of jobs in the for-profit industry, he said.
Nonprofit employment grew 23 percent from 1995 to 2009, according to a statewide analysis of Indiana nonprofits.
In terms of giving back, Vande Velde said the Legacy Foundation has awarded $30 million into the community.
Nationally, not-for-profits increasingly are turning to social media for fundraising, but traditional means of soliciting donations are still the most common, according to a survey by the Nonprofit Research Collaborative.
