The retail sector is on an upward climb, with buyers looking to national economic health as their cue.

"I think that the stock market moving up has a positive impact on the way people think about spending money and making purchases of luxury goods," said Joshua Halpern, president of Schererville-based Albert's Diamond Jewelers.

Halpern reported an uptick in the retail industry for the last three months and expects the next quarter to mirror that trend, both regionally and nationally.

Halpern, who represents the retail sector on The Times Board of Economists, said in January that 2012 was a roller coaster year for retailers. Sales were strong at the start of 2012, but national conversations in the months leading to the elections cut the momentum.
