Malibu returns buyer pride
As the model year car calendar rolls into 2009, some consumer thinking is still stuck in the 1980s. It is time to bridge that gap.
Today's Detroit-built cars are far-and-away better than ones buyers had in their garages three decades ago.
Cookie-cutter styling is gone along with lackluster assembly.
This year, General Motors leveled the skeptics with the midsize Chevrolet Malibu sedan that carries a 1964 nameplate but none of the baggage associated with Malibu models from yesteryear.
Sleek contemporary design, precision craftsmanship and advanced technology earned the front-wheel drive Chevy Malibu the industry's coveted 2008 North American Car of the Year.
Further validation comes from J.D. Power and Associates as they award Malibu the "highest ranked midsize car in initial quality", while Consumer Guide Automotive stamps Chevy Malibu a "Best Buy" among model class competitors.
Recently, I tested the 2009 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid and drove away equally impressed with the car's demeanor.
Malibu Hybrid joins base LS, LT and up-level LTZ to meet the spectrum of consumer budgets at a price that starts (LS) at $20,745. Malibu Hybrid costs $24,695. Add $650 for freight.
Chevy Malibu Hybrid features a 2.4-liter four cylinder engine teamed with an electric motor to generate 164-hp mated to a four-speed automatic that renders 26-miles per gallon around town and 34-mpg on the open road.
Though the electric motor assists the gasoline engine, it does not allow the car to operate under electric only mobility.
The hybrid system features an AutoStop mode that turns off the gas engine while at a stop. The car instantly restarts when pressure is lifted from the brake pedal. Early fuel shut off is also applied when the car decelerates.
Low-resistance tires wrap standard 17-inch wheels reined by anti-lock regenerative brakes. Stability and traction control is also included.
Inside, Malibu Hybrid accommodates five adult passengers without compromising leg, knee or headroom front to back. Rear doors open wide for easy access to the second row quarters.
The interior's attention to detail is highlighted by an ergonomic design and premium materials that convey quality and value. Broad seat and back cushions are supple for long distance comfort.
A flowing instrument panel features dual cockpit styling accented by tasteful two-tone trim. Gauges are backlit with soft blue hues at night while ambient lighting showcases the overhead console and door pulls.
Tilt and telescopic steering wheel with cruise control and integrated audio controls add a custom fit to the driver's comfort and ease of operation.
The 2009 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid delivers significant technology wrapped in a quality-built car that will set past impressions free and pave the way to today's transportation.
