More than 60 Chicagoland new car dealerships are hosting a Barbecue for the Troops this summer to support the USO (United Service Organization).
This Saturday, Aug. 10, Lexus of Merrillville will be hosting one of these barbecues for Northwest Indiana residents to participate in and support.
The event at Lexus of Merrillville will be from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. and have hot dogs, hamburgers and other barbecue fare with 100 percent of the proceeds going to local troops.
There will also be a giveaway for an iPad Mini for all those who enter the raffle between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. The winner will be named around 4:15 p.m.
As one of the only dealers in Northwest Indiana participating in this event, General Manager Peter Takacs said he wanted to host the event to allow local residents to be involved and give back.
"We decided to participate in this event because it is the right thing to do," Takacs said. "You can't give back to the troops too much, and this is a fun and inexpensive way to raise money to support them."
Takacs said this event is a way to give more gratitude to our local troops.
"A lot of troops don't get enough thank-you's," he said. "This is a way for us to say to the troops, 'You're on our radar, and we want to say thank you for your service.'"
The Chicago Automobile Trade Association involved more than 35 Chicagoland communities in this effort to raise money for local troops and military families who need support.
These barbecue events give Chicagoland residents a way to show their appreciation and gratitude for our service men and women, and help to make a real difference in their lives.
The mission of the USO is to enhance the quality of life of U.S. Armed Forces personnel and their families. The USO also aims to fosters the relationships between the military community and civilian communities.
Lexus of Merrillville is located at 3957 U.S. 30 in Merrillville.
