The Lexus LS has not taken a back seat to passenger comfort since it debuted in 1989.
Today, the luxury brand raises the bar on comfort with the 2013 Lexus LS 460.
The fifth-generation Lexus LS greets the driver and front passenger with a redesigned dashboard that holds a multi-facetted 12-inch navigation screen positioned higher for easier view of digital maps, climate control functions and audio settings – all at the same time.
Center stack and console controls are close at hand and can be operated with little effort from the driver’s 16-way power seat. Front passenger enjoys 12-way seat positioning.
Use of supple foam brings a new feel to LS seat cushions that cradle occupants in a lower seating position.
Rear-seat passengers of the LS 600hL are treated to executive status with an extended cabin that features NBA-size legroom, rear center console and right-side ottoman that powers up for more relaxed comfort.
All seats are climate controlled. For 2013, a unique LS feature sets the cushions to a desired temperature with use of seat sensors that recognize an individual’s body temperature for immediate comfort while waiting for cold cabin quarters to warm in winter.
The effect also works to automatically warm the steering wheel.
Choice of leather upholstery and real wood accents showcase the cabin. Interior wood trim takes up to seven days to complete. The wooden steering wheel requires 38 days to build. Craftsmanship and attention to detail is superb.
Outside, LS breaks away from the norm with a new spindle-shaped grille that dominates the front fascia.
A standard 4.6-liter, V8 engine with eight-speed automatic transmission delivers 386 horsepower to its rear-drive powertrain. Available all-wheel drive drops engine output to 360 hp
Fuel economy for the rear-drive LS reaches 16 miles per gallon in town and 24 mpg on the open road. All-wheel drive lowers highway mileage to 23 mpg.
Eco, Normal and Sport modes tweak the LS driving experience.
Normal mode delivers compliant driveability while Eco is aimed at fuel savings. Sport mode adjusts throttle control and electric power steering for a sportier feel.
Buyers looking for a racier experience can opt for the 2013 Lexus LS F Sport that places performance car prowess and agility into the hands of the driver.
Lexus LS 460 F Sport Package includes special exterior and interior trim, Brembo brakes, steering wheel paddle shifters and a sport-tuned suspension. All-wheel drive is optional.
The extended length Lexus LS 600hL is the first hybrid to combine electric nickel-metal-hydride battery power with a 5.0-liter V8 to build 438 hp. Price for the LS 600hL will be released this month.
Cost for the 2013 Lexus LS 460 starts at $71,900, followed by the LS 460L at $78,290. Lexus LS 460 F Sport ups the ante to $81,990. All-wheel drive runs $2,945-$3,485 more depending on model. Add $895 across the board for freight.
