Volkswagen Passat ushers value and large capacity to the midsize sedan market with a starting price of $23,260 including freight.
Passat’s 2017 portfolio comes shipped from Volkswagen’s Chattanooga, Tennessee assembly plant in S, R-Line, SE and SEL trim with distinct features and content upgrades dedicated to each model.
All versions come with a laundry list of standard comfort and technology features that help soothe the daily commute for up to five adult passengers.
For 2017, the base Passat S adds Forward Collision Warning to its list of standard features.
Passat S is powered by a 1.8 liter four-cylinder engine coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission to yield 170 horsepower and fuel economy of 23 miles per gallon/city and 34-mpg/highway.
The R-Line builds on the S model amenities and adds Volkswagen App Content, Blind Spot Monitoring and Cross Traffic Alert as standard equipment.
Other R-Line features include an upgraded touch screen, an audio system with USB connectivity and voice control, forward collision warning, front braking assist and heated front seats with power driver seat.
An optional lighting package showcases LED headlamps and daytime running lights as well as LED tail lights to the front and rear appearance.
The Volkswagen Passat SE ups the ante with push-button start standard.
Remote start, Park Pilot park assist, 18-inch alloy wheels and LED headlamps and tail lights are also available.
I tested the top-of-the-line 2017 Volkswagen Passat SEL Premium with a 3.6L six-cylinder engine that delivers 280-hp governed by a 6-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission for 20-mpg around town and 28-mpg across the Borman Expressway.
Passat SEL Premium comes loaded with all the content of the S, R-Line and SE models.
Other standard niceties include fog lights, leather upholstery, heated front- and heated split-folding rear seats, power sliding sunroof, Fender premium audio system and Bluetooth connectivity.
Each 2017 VW Passat rides on a 110.4 inch wheelbase.
That combined with its 192 inch body length, provides generous cabin space for front and backseat legroom akin to a full-size sedan.
Trunk space is equally enormous with 16 cubic feet of cargo capacity.
The content laden 2017 Volkswagen Passet V6 SEL Premium crosses the bottom line at $33,995. Add $820 destination charge.
