I love my job. I get the privilege of informing the public. Every Monday I punch in my access code into the phone and wait in amazement as you the readers tell me of the particularly irritating things that happen behind the steering wheels of your cars. This Monday though, it was special. I heard a very nice lady named Jessica from INDOT who was at the intersection of U.S. Hwy. 231 and Broadway in Crown Point requesting more details in reference to our article on June 1. I use the “our” because this was a reader submission and to my amazement there was an INDOT worker dispatched and addressing a problem that appeared in Road Rants. People, INDOT is reading your rants! I picked up the phone and called Jessica. She was not in, so I left a message. Later that day she called back again! Wow! She said that INDOT had reprogrammed the light and to let her know if it worked out better. Our (state) tax dollars at work. Hello Washington, how about some action like this from Congress?
Rant 1: I have had a few responses from Craig H. One in particular I have to agree with. There is nothing more aggravating than people that drive fast to pass you then slow down once they are in front of you. This is even truer when you are on the freeway in some desolate area like Nebraska. Craig says, “What's the deal with people who pass you up only to slow down in front if you? On longer trips I like to use my speed control, also known as cruise control to some of you. No matter how fast I drive there is always some driver who wants to go faster or maybe they just want to be ahead of the other cars. Go ahead, clear the road of speed traps for me. But usually within a mile or two I am passing them up driving the same speed I was when they flew past like they were on their way to a fire. And when they notice another car has passed them up, VRRROOM! Off they go again, another fire I guess, only for the process to be repeated over and over until one of us has to pull off the road. But it’s only a matter of time until the next competitive speed freak comes along. This happens every time I travel. And for those of you who don't know what speed control is, in most cars there's a little button you can push and the car will maintain whatever speed you set it at. Try it you might like it. Yes Craig, some folks don’t know how to press the !@#$ button.
I have been thinking of getting some bumper stickers made up to send to you when you rant. Now I don’t think of myself as all that creative. My first Idea would be something like, “I Rant.” Knowing that you will come up with something so much better than this, I will leave this on the table for a few weeks and then we will announce the winner, So please, send in your ideas, and maybe we can put your picture in the paper and give you some recognition.
It’s Audience Participation Time... Want to vent about a bad intersection? Have a Dimwit Driver Alert? Great! Send it to: RoadRants@nwi.com. You can also call in your rants at 219-933-1010. Leave your message. Include all the details. We will work it into the paper. We are also on Facebook, NWI Road Rants. Until next time, be safe. No one else is.
